Doctor Who actress Aisling Bea has recalled the terrifying moment her arm was left "hanging off" following a bike riding accident.

The Irish comedian and actress, 40, shared the story with Jonathan Ross, detailing how the horror injury came about. The Alice & Jack star had been "knocked down off her bike in the pandemic", which led to her requiring surgery to have her shoulder "totally reconstructed".

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, set to air on Saturday night, Aisling said: "I was supposed to have keyhole surgery on my shoulder from an accident two days beforehand but when I went in, they found out my arm was hanging off. They had to go in and totally reconstruct my shoulder while I was asleep. I got knocked down off my bike in the pandemic."

Due to Aisling's medical woes, scripts for the second series of BBC Avoidance had to be adapted. Aisling had been due to start filming the new season alongside Romesh Ranganathan before her surgery, but rewrites took place to accommodate Aisling's unexpected sling.

The award-winning comic, who plays Megan in the comedy-drama, was unable to move much in her sling and admits she was taking a lot of painkillers to get through scenes. "We were scheduled to film for a week and a half. Out of my head on painkillers. I just remember it as one long day," Aisling recalled. "We had to make my sling part of the character but I really couldn't move very much."

The first series of Avoidance aired in June 2022 and followed Jonathan (Romesh Ranganathan) struggle to adapt to life as a single man. After his partner Claire (Jessica Knappett) throws him out of the family home, Jonathan goes to live with his sister and her wife - taking his young son with him.

A second series was commissioned last year, with Aisling joining the cast. Aisling's character Megan will provide some drama as a new love interest for Jonathan - foiling his plan to win back Claire and rebuild his family. Chatting on The Jonathan Ross Show about filming sexy scenes with Romesh, Aisling admitted it's was even more awkward due to their off-screen friendship.

"Totally harder," she confessed. "The two of us had one scene where we had to kiss for the first time for as long as Jessica Knappett, who is an amazing actress, came in the back and we'd split our heads apart and Jess would be there. It took longer for her to open the door than we thought! I knew I was doing bad kissing. When they finally called 'cut' I said 'You're not going to tell Josh Widdicombe, James Acaster and all the lads about us kissing are you?'."

Elsewhere on this weekend's offering of The Jonathan Ross Show, Perrie Edwards catches up with host Jonathan following the release of her debut single Forget About Us. Discussing how it feels to be on the show without her Little Mix bandmates, the mum-of-one admitted: "It’s really bizarre not having them with me, it does feel really different. I think it was just the right time for us to part ways, do our own thing and I just want them to win so it’s nice seeing them do their own thing as well."
