A circus performer might end up paralysed after he missed the safety net and hit the ring while performing.

Terrifying footage reveals the "human cannonball" - which is a phrase referring to circus artists with this particular job - balancing on the edge of the cylinder. He climbs inside it while the ringmaster asks spectators to wish him "so long" and count down.

Then, the cannon shoots the man across the big top. The aerial stunt performer flies through the air but he slips through the gap in the safety net.

There is an audible gasp heard from audience members, as the performer crashes to the ground with a loud thud. Venue staff rush to assist him as he lies not moving in the ring.

The horror took place at the Los Vásquez circus show in Antofagasta, Chile, last Friday night (5 April). The performer was taken straight to hospital with several fractures, local media reported.

His condition is serious and he could end up paralysed, according to hospital sources. Officials were sent to the circus to investigate and they confirmed several irregularities, as reported on NeedToKnow.

Antofagasta Regional Labour Director, Margarita López said: “He was working informally, without a work contract or social security coverage. We found the same situation with other circus workers.”

The circus was allowed to continue operating, but with a ban on aerial stunts until the investigation is concluded. The hospitalised performer’s name is withheld.
