Andy Cole has slammed Mikel Arteta for being "disrespectful" to Aaron Ramsdale following his decision to drop the Arsenal and England goalkeeper this season.

Ramsdale, 25, quickly became the Gunners' No.1 shot-stopper after joining the club in the summer of 2021 but has hardly featured this year following the arrival of David Raya, who has established himself as Arteta's first-choice in goal after swapping Brentford for the Emirates.

Since finding his game time restricted, Ramsdale has been linked with a host of other Premier League clubs including Newcastle - and Cole believes the former Sheffield United man should move on for the good of his career if he can in the summer.

Speaking to Betfred, he said: "Nine times out of ten, when a player moves to a different club, they’re meant to be their new club’s number one centre-forward, centre-half, goalkeeper or whatever it may be. If Aaron makes the move, he will be Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper.

"I think he’s been hard done by, I really do. He was so good for Arsenal last season and then all of a sudden, Mikel Arteta has gone out and got a new goalkeeper and initially claimed that he had two number ones, which was complete nonsense from day one.

"The way he’s disregarded Ramsdale has been really disrespectful. He’s mugged him off basically. I like how he goes about his business and he deserves to be treated with a bit more respect, so if he does move on from Arsenal, then he certainly would do a good job at Newcastle."

Despite making 41 appearances in total last year, Ramsdale has featured just 11 times this term. Only six of those have come in the league, which Arsenal currently top.

Although Raya is expected to make his loan move permanent in the summer, Arteta has previously stressed that he would like to retain Ramsdale's services and urged him to stay at the club.

"I want Aaron with us," Arteta said frankly back in December. "I am very happy to have two very, very good goalkeepers and Aaron is staying with us. We want to be better, so we want to add to what we already have. That's the intention that we have."

After hosting Bayern Munich in Europe on in midweek, Arsenal will resume their bid to claim a first Premier League since 2004 when they host Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
