Royal expert says there's good reason so many royals still with their exes

Even now, decades after their divorce, Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew still live together at the Duke of York's Windsor mansion. Whilst the arrangement might raise some eyebrows, they are by no means the only royals to still share space even after their romantic relationships have ended.

One royal expert has explained why, in their view, there is one reason that the royals are hesitant to live apart even after divorcing. The surprising explanation might indicate that for those inside the monarchy, it simply isn't worth it for them to move even if it means that they have to continue living in pretty close quarters with their exes.

The expert, Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, explained to The Sun, that in her opinion, it seems as though the motivation to remain in close proximity to their exes is primarily a financial one, coupled with the fact that the residences the royals occupy simply are not normal homes - and their vast size certainly could help ease relations - and used the example of Peter Phillips and his ex-wife Autumn, who still live in the same place.

"All those estates have a lot of estate cottages, but they usually have tenants in them," the expert explained. "It depends on whether they have got a free one at the time, the Phillips' did, and that helped him because otherwise he'd have to be buying a house for Autumn. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they didn't want to buy any more property."

Autumn and Peter separated in late 2019, but formally divorced in 2021, however, the former couple still both live on the Gatcombe Park Estate, just not in the same building. Given that the couple share two young children - Savannah, 13, and Isla, 12 - being so close must make co-parenting more convenient.

Peter took a leaf out of his mother's book with the arrangement, who also split Gatcombe Park with her ex-husband, Captain Mark Phillips, for many years. The pair both lived in homes on the estate with their new spouses, per The Sun, but now Mark lives in America.

Since 2008, Sarah Ferguson has called Royal Lodge - Andrew's 30-room mansion - her own when she stays in the UK, and despite the fact the breakdown of the pair's marriage was filled with scandal and rumours, the former husband and wife have remained exceptionally close. Despite reports that King Charles is keen for his younger brother to move out of the enormous grade II listed property in Windsor Great Park into a smaller home, Andrew has not shown any indication that he is willing to budge.
