James Maddison apologised to Spurs fans following Tottenham's chastening 4-0 loss at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs travelled up to Tyneside with last year's 6-1 drubbing fresh in their memory and Ange Postecoglou's side were condemned to another demoralising defeat at St. James' Park by the rampant Magpies.

Two quick-fire goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon left Maddison and co with a mountain to climb before Isak plundered his second shortly after the break. Fabian Schar's bullet header in the 87th minute sealed a superb win for Newcastle, who have risen to sixth in the Premier League table.

Tottenham's players issued a statement and refunded fans' match tickets last year after getting thrashed by Newcastle. And Maddison was quick to apologise to supporters during a post-match interview with SpursPlay.

He said: “We’re just as disappointed as any of those fans. We can only put our hands up and apologise to the travelling fans today. Even at the end when we went over a load of them were still clapping us after a performance like that. You don’t expect to be clapped when you go and applaud the fans so thank you to them for sticking with us.

“But I can only apologise that they had to watch that scoreline today. We weren’t good enough and we have to accept that, look in the mirror and know we weren’t good enough.

“It wasn’t just a fluke, it wasn’t that they got lucky goals, we weren’t good enough today to a man. We need to have a stern talking to ourselves to pick ourselves up because we can have a period of mourning, if you like, over it, but you’ve got to quickly switch on, the Premier League comes thick and fast, we’ve got a big game next.”

Postecoglou also offered a frank assessment of the match during his post-match media duties. The Spurs head coach admitted that the result was "a bit raw" and that his team were nowhere near good enough.

Speaking to Match of the Day, he said: “It's a tough one, a bit raw at the moment. Credit to Newcastle, I thought they were really good today. We never really got to grips with the game and weren't able to execute any of the stuff we usually do. Credit to them but just have to take them.”

He went on to insist his team have to bounce back as they bid to qualify for Europe in the coming weeks, adding: “You can't sit there and feel sorry for yourself, it's not the nature of what we do. There's some lessons in there, we've got to take them and look ahead.”
