Two people, including a child, were killed after a knife attack in southern Germany today.

Two people have died after they were stabbed in a park in the German city of Aschaffenburg, Bavaria.

The knifeman was arrested following the attack which reportedly left several other people injured.

He was detained by the police in Schoental Park, an English-style garden, shortly after the attack at about 10.45am.

One child was among the dead, according to the German tabloid Bild.

Investigators first said on social media that two people had been arrested, but this was later clarified as the second person was a witness who was questioned, the outlet reports.

One eyewitness claimed they saw a man being taken away ‘in a headlock.’

While the huge park and the nearby wider area has been cordoned off, the police said there was no danger to the public.

The police refused to comment on the identities of the victims.

The attacker’s background or motive was not confirmed, but the police said it was not terrorism.

All train services at a nearby station were stopped as the suspect tried to escape across the tracks.

Schoental Park, originally built as a zoo in the heart of the town, is a popular spot among visitors who flock to the historical city located in the northwestern corner of Bavaria state.

It boasts magnolia trees which blossom in the spring, old sculptures, a pond and the ruins of an old church.
