Petr Cech previously appealed for more time for Mikel Arteta as the pressure cranked up on the Arsenal boss.

Arteta was appointed as the Gunners’ new head coach in December 2019 as a replacement for Unai Emery. However, it did not immediately go to plan for Arteta.

Back-to-back eighth-placed finishes led to appeals for him to be sacked. Cech - who spent four years with the Gunners - suggested that it would only be a matter of time for Arteta to restore the North London side to their former glory.

Speaking in December 2020, he said: "It's hard for any manager when results don't go your way and then you try to change the way the team play or the philosophy of the football.

"When you start to change a little bit it needs time. As well to implement that faster you have to have everybody believe in it, you need some results as well.

"As soon as you are on the football pitch knowing you've won three on the bounce you don't worry less about what's going to happen you just worry about your game, you just go on and suddenly you go 'Oh this works, that works'.

"It's a lot about confidence. At the moment when you hit the wall this is the moment when you need everybody to pull in the same direction and help you out.

"This is the hardest part in football because it's easy to suddenly say this is not working and do something else but you can't do that all the time. But of course in modern football it's the results that count and at the end of the day you need to find your balance to have success and the way you do it."

Cech has proven to be spot on since then. Arteta had Arsenal challenging for the Premier League crown last term - where they were narrowly edged out by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The Gunners have repeated their title fight this term. Arteta’s side will be aiming to take a significant step towards the title this weekend. They come up against Arteta’s predecessor Unai Emery as Aston Villa travel to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Rivals Man City hosted relegation-threatened Luton, while Liverpool travel to Crystal Palace on what could be a significant weekend in the title race.
