Rio Ferdinand missed the mark with his prediction that Arsenal will lose two more games this season - they could lose three.

The former Manchester United star had previously predicted two more defeats for the Gunners between now and the end of the season. He had suggested that the Gunners would lose 3-2 to their North London rivals Tottenham later this month.

Ferdinand has also tipped his former side Man United to secure a 3-2 success over the Gunners during the penultimate game of the season. Even those predictions had Arsenal sitting second behind Man City come the end of the campaign.

But even that looks too optimistic after Arsenal kicked off their key title run-in with a defeat by Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta's side slumped to a 2-0 defeat against the Midlands side at the Emirates on Sunday - Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scoring late on for Villa.

It leaves Arsenal two points off the pace and behind current champions Manchester City. And should the other two losses predicted by Ferdinand come to fruition, they will be even further off the pace - a worrying turn of events given the Gunners' stunning form for the majority of the campaign.

While Ferdinand’s prediction has already been proven wrong, the same could also be said for his TNT Sports colleague Laura Woods. An Arsenal fan, she had tipped the Gunners to win every game for the remainder of the campaign and consequently win the title.

That triggered a humorous response from Ferdinand, who teased Woods for her loyalty. He said: "You've planned that because you're an Arsenal freak."

Arsenal could now potentially win every game between now and the end of the season and still not win the title. Former Arsenal star Paul Merson now believes that their title chances have now gone.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “You don’t get these chances. You go home tonight, you sit there and you think ‘it's gone’. “For me, it’s gone. You’ve worked that hard for 32 games to go that extra yard, just one yard not 20 or 30, stop that cross. It’s lazy.” Probed further, he added: “[It’s gone] 100%. They’re gone.”

Arsenal will no doubt be hoping to respond next weekend. Following their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich in Germany, they take on Wolves at Molineux. Elsewhere, Liverpool travel to Craven Cottage for a clash with Fulham.

Man City are not back in Premier League action for ten days. Their next fixture sees them welcome Real Madrid to the Etihad, while Pep Guardiola's side also have an FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea to prepare for. Man City’s next Premier League game pits them against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
