Brits planning camping holidays in the sunshine have just been given an extra dose of inspiration as Europe's cheapest camping hotspots have been revealed.
Camping can be a great way to have a family break on a budget, but unfortunately the UK weather often leaves a lot to be desired. It's therefore no surprise that Brits are looking to sunnier climates - and the good news is that there are plenty of cheap options abroad too.
In fact, camping website Pitchup.com has reported a boost in bookings across Europe year-on-year, with Portugal and Spain proving particularly popular. However if it's the cheapest country you're after, then Germany should be on your radar.
Based on two adults paying for a campsite, cabin or other lodging, Germany came in at the lowest rates of approximately £32.67 per night, whether you're planning a trip to the Bavarian Alps, Black Forest or Baltic Sea coast. It was closely followed by Slovenia at just £45.74 per night, Belgium at £45.75, France at £46.53 and Portugal at £47.76 per night.
Portugal holidays are also on the rise, and not just because of the budget-friendly stays; Pitchup says that it's seen a "substantial surge" of bookings to the hotspot, renowned for its incredible beaches, vibrant towns and natural parks. Other popular camping destinations in 2024 include Austria, Spain, Germany and Belgium, all of which have also seen a boost in bookings.

Pitchup.com's research found that the average price for a 9-night stay outside of the UK came in at £533.88 (£59.32 per night), while the average family of four spent around £4,678 for a 9-night holiday abroad in 2023 when staying at hotels.
Dan Yates, Founder and Managing Director of Pitchup.com, commented on the data: "The early surge in demand for camping holidays across the likes of Portugal, Austria and Spain shows a real shift in holiday preferences this year. With the huge economic pressures the UK is facing right now, price is undoubtedly a significant draw. But, beyond affordability lies a whole host of other enticing benefits that are intrinsic to camping.
"Immersing yourself in the great outdoors and embracing remote living has a truly positive impact on mental wellbeing. But to do this in countries known for stunning scenery, warm weather and rich culture offers everyone from families and couples to friends and solo explorers a truly unique experience, enabling travellers to discover more of Europe while staying on budget."
