NETFLIX has announced that The Witcher's days are numbered as the fourth season goes into production.

Fans began to fear that the fantasy series was coming to a close after the leading man announced his departure from the show in 2022.

Henry Cavill was replaced by Liam Hemsworth for the upcoming season, and the A-list actor has shared his excitement for playing the role of Geralt.

He took to Instagram to announce the news, saying: "As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia."

However, despite finding a new star for the central character, rumours that the fifth season will be The Witcher's last have now been confirmed by the streaming giant.

Netflix bosses have announced that season five will be filmed immediately after season four, and will see the conclusion of Geralt's story.

The Witcher series is based on The Witcher saga by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and there are only three books left to adapt.

Show creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich shared that the plotline of the final two seasons will be drawn from Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake.

She went on to add: "It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.

"We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends."

The release date for season four has not been announced yet, but Netflix shared a recent picture of the cast preparing for filming by participating in a table read.

A synopsis of the season has also been released, which reads: "After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other.

"If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again."
