A Grand National punter who couldn’t make up her mind about which horse to back has scooped a whopping £26,000 out of her indecision.

The elderly woman walked into a Ladbrokes betting shop in Surrey last Saturday to place her once-a-year-bet on the world famous race. She had narrowed down her choices from the field of 34 horses to three runners.

But when she started to fill out her betting slip, she was torn between I Am Maximus, Delta Work and Minella Indo.

So instead of backing them individually she put them together in a combination tricast for the biggest race of the year.

A combination tricast allows the customer to select three horses, which then need to finish the race in first, second and third place, in any order, meaning the stake is multiplied by six to cover all combinations.

I Am Maximus, ridden by Ladbrokes ambassador, Paul Townend, crossed the line in first-place at 7-1, ahead of Delta Work (28-1) and Minella Indo (28-1), netting the customer £26,147.60 from a total stake of £30.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "It's tough enough picking out the winner of the Grand National, but this punter has somehow managed to go two steps further by landing second and third in the biggest race of the year."

"This story is made even more incredible by the method to the madness behind the bet.

“Unsure which horse to back to win, our customer simply decided to back all three, landing - quite comfortably - one of the best racing bets we've seen in a long time!"
