TWO suspects have been arrested after a 57-year-old man was killed “trying to stop his car from being stolen” near Manchester City’s stadium.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to reports of an unresponsive male on Olympic Street, Beswick, at just before 11am on Saturday.
Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency services at the scene, the victim was pronounced dead.
Officers believed he was hit by a black Land Rover.
On Sunday afternoon a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, and a 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
They were held in custody and being questioned by police.
Initial inquiries suggest that the victim was killed trying to stop his car from being stolen, GMP said.
Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Smith said: "At the centre of this investigation is a grieving family, who we will do all we can to get answers for."
She called for anyone who saw anything suspicious or who witnessed the incident to come forward.
Members of the public rushed to the victim's aid following the horror at the junction of Holly Street and Olympic Street.
The horror occurred around 1km from the Etihad Stadium where City beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup quarter-final yesterday afternoon.
CSI officers were at the scene on Saturday taking pictures, as other detectives made door-to-door enquiries.
A number of evidence cones were also spotted within the cordon.
Stephen Blanchard, 47, who lives near the scene, told the Manchester Evening News: “It’s scary because this is a quiet neighbourhood.
"There’s no trouble around here. Nothing like this ever happens.”
