Justin Fields has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers by the Chicago Bears - making way for college sensation Caleb Williams.

The Bears have sent Fields to the Steelers and are now likely to draft Heisman Trophy winner Williams as their first pick. Fields is set to support Russell Wilson at the Steelers, who was signed earlier this week after leaving the Denver Broncos.

The Bears, who hold the No.1 pick in the NFL Draft, are expected to choose Williams after considering him and Fields for their long-term starter position. Despite impressing in his last two seasons as a rusher, Fields had consistent struggles as a passer which led to the Bears choosing Williams for their new-look offence under playcaller Shane Waldron.

The Bears had already started discussions about trading Fields when they knew they would have the No. 1 overall draft pick, with fans hopeful of gaining significant draft assets from his departure. It was thought that the Bears could get a second-round pick for Fields, or at least a third-round pick from a quarterback who has shown competent play.

However, the Bears only received a sixth-round pick from the Steelers - showing he had little value and interest elsewhere. After the NFL Network announced the trade, it was reported that Fields would indeed be Wilson's backup at the Steelers.

Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Steelers after leaving the Broncos, who still owe him $35million (£ this season. Pittsburgh signed the Super Bowl winner on a contract worth just $1.55m (, while Fields will earn just $3m this year.

While Fields will be the backup in Pittsburgh, it seems that the Bears are ready to start Williams from day one - after the team made another big move this week to boost their offence. This week, the Bears traded for Los Angeles Chargers star receiver Keenan Allen, adding him to an impressive group with DJ Moore and Cole Kmet for Williams to join.

As well as holding the first overall pick, the Bears also have the 10th pick - where they could add to their receiving core, or select an offensive lineman to strengthen their unit and give Williams the best chance to succeed.
