Brits have crowned the nation's favourite tea brand and it might be quite the shock for some that English Breakfast has not taken the top spot.

As most Brits will have no doubt marked in their calendars, April 21 is National Tea Day and a study by supermarket experts Britsuperstore has declared the nation's favourite brand that will likely prove to be contentious in some households. A cup of tea is an almost-sacred part of British culture and many arguments can start based solely around how much tea is used to make the perfect cuppa.

According to experts, Yorkshire Tea took the top spot as the UK's favourite tea brand and Lotus Biscoff was the top biscuit to pair with it. In a stunning upset, Green Tea pipped the classic English Breakfast to the post. Britsuperstore used Ahrefs and Google keyword data to find the number of searches for popular tea brands.

The vital research was inspired by a Grocer survey that found 45 per cent of Brits enjoy drinking tea between two to five times a day, with an average of 50 billion cups being gulped down each year, The Daily Star reported.

Another census by the UK Tea and Infusions Association stated that 44 per cent of Brits enjoyed pairing a biscuit with their brew. Other key findings from the Britsuperstore study include:

The survey was further inspired by the Grocer study that found 71 per cent of Brits consider a tea's quality as being the most crucial factor. Meanwhile, the price of tea was deemed to be the most important for 31 per cent despite the cost soaring by an estimated 16 per cent last year, The Daily Star reported.

According to a January study by food industry news outlet The Caterer found that tea is growing in popularity in the UK and accounts for some 46 per cent of all hot beverage sales.
