Mark Clattenburg claims the three refereeing decisions that went against Nottingham Forest were "a joke" with the PGMOL able to avoid such a situation.

The City Ground outfit lost out in a relegation scrap as Everton secured a 2-0 win at Goodison Park. It leaves them in a precarious position, sitting one point above the bottom three. Forest were left fuming as three penalty shouts were waved away by the officials.

Some of those looked to be stonewall penalties, including a handball by Ashley Young which went unpunished. Forest opted to release a statement on social media, bemoaning the performances of the officials and pointing out that the VAR appointment was a fan of Luton Town - one of their relegation rivals.

Clattenburg, who is employed by Forest as a refereeing consultant, has pointed to the lack of intervention by VAR and claims the Nottingham outfit were left feeling "victimised" after they were on the receiving end of several shocking calls.

He told the Daily Mail: "One of these errors would have been bad enough. Three was a joke, and that is why Nottingham Forest were left feeling victimised after another defeat in which zero big decisions went their way."

Young was at the centre of all the big decisions with Stuart Atwell, the man on VAR, opting against sending the on-field referee to the monitor for another look. Clattenburg claimed such marginal decisions were why the technology was introduced, but failing to use it was a major error.

He said: These situations were precisely why video technology was brought into the Premier League and yet, Attwell did not send Taylor to his monitor. Not once. It was a hat-trick of howlers from the refereeing team and, unfortunately for Forest, a continuation of an unjust trend that has hampered their survival fight."

Forest's decision to suggest that the influence of a Luton fan played a factor has copped major criticism. Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have both hit out at the club with the latter suggesting Clattenburg should resign from his role at Forest.

The ex-Premier League referee though maintains that the saga was created by the league and totally avoidable had they made other choices.

"I would not have risked this situation if I were the head of the referees and all of this could have been avoided had the PGMOL simply made smarter appointments," he said. "Referees do not make mistakes deliberately but this was mind-boggling to watch. Why Attwell did not send Taylor to his screen, only he will know."
