Jeff Stelling believes Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana should have been sent off during Sunday's dramatic FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City.

The Red Devils booked their place in next month's final by the skin of their teeth, beating the Championship outfit on penalties after the Sky Blues fought back from 3-0 down to level the tie at 3-3 in the last knockings. At one stage, it looked like Coventry had won it deep into extra time, but Victor Torp's strike was ruled out after VAR intervened for an offside in the build-up.

The game was sent to penalties and Onana proved to have a pivotal impact, with the Cameroon international saving Callum O'Hare's spot-kick. However, according to former Soccer Saturday host Stelling, the goalkeeper shouldn't have been on the pitch.

Onana had been booked for timewasting in normal time, but Stelling believes it is what the United No. 1 did after that meant he should have been shown another card in quick succession. The goalkeeper went to the side of his goal and had a quick drink, further delaying the taking of a goalkick.

"By the way, just one thing that never gets mentioned, gets overlooked, I just want to say Andre Onana shouldn’t have been on the field for the penalty shootout," Stelling said on talkSPORT.

"He’s been given a yellow card after 85 minutes by Rob Jones. And what does he do? He goes behind his goal, picks up his water bottle, takes a drink of water.

"If Rob Jones had had any bottle, he’d have shown him another yellow card immediately because the goalkeeper was taking the mickey out of the referee."

Onana did go on to actually pick up a second yellow card, but it came during the penalty shootout which meant the one shown to him in normal time was not relevant and he remained on the pitch to play his part.

United may have sealed their place in the final, but the manner in which they let their three-goal lead slip will undoubtedly concern Ten Hag. He said as much after the game.

"We had control for 75 minutes and have to give Coventry a compliment for what they did in the last 15 minutes," Ten Hag told ITV. "We have to improve. We talk a lot about this. First, you have to put yourself in a winning position but then you have to take it over the line. In these moments we are making mistakes and not keeping our responsibilities."
