Homeowner makes gruesome discovery after finding 'toes sticking out the ground'

The owner of a house in Florida was horrified to discover human remains in his garden after seeing blackened "toes sticking out of the ground," while renovating.

The grim discovery happened just before 7pm on Wednesday, March 13, at a private home being offered for rent, law enforcement officials said. The homeowner was reportedly doing work in the garden when he came across the toes.

As police work to find out who the body belonged to and how they died, the woman also working at the property has described the moment when the body was found. “We were working inside the house and then the owner came to us and said ‘Hey, there is something here. We have to call 911'. I said OK. I was shook,” she told News4Jax.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, described seeing human feet protruding from the ground in the yard that appeared to be decomposing.

"They were all black and stuff. But I guess that was from decomposing," she explained. "I just hope that everything gets solved. My reaction to this is just craziness. I would never expect this, especially at a house that I am working at," she added.

A police officer from Jacksonville County went to the house and "observed two feet sticking up out of the ground," an incident report obtained by the New York Post said. The body was dug up and taken to the Duval County Medical Examiner’s Office. It has not been identified yet and there was no word yet on the cause and manner of death.

The following day authorities started digging in the garden and set up blue forensic tents. It appears as though officers were looking for clues to the identity of the deceased. It is not known how long the body had been in the yard.

The owner of the home where the distressing discovery was made said he had no idea who the body belonged to or how it got on his property. "I want to offer my condolences to the young person or to the person they found at my property," he told News4Jax. "No family at all should have to go through that at all. That's the first thing I want to say."
