The late Queen refused to tell anyone what her favourite food was.
In the course of her 70-year-long reign, she travelled the globe and visited every corner of the Commonwealth, as well as attending thousands of engagements around the UK. But wherever she went there were a few things she was careful to never let slip, and her favourite food was one of them.
As monarch, the late Queen was cooked for by some of the most talented chefs around the world, and likely tasted delicacies that aren't cropping up on most people's weekly meal plans. But she never shared which of these treats was her absolute favourite, not even to the royal chefs themselves.
Whilst former royal chefs have divulged which foods crop up on the royal menus for big occasions like Easter and Christmas, the late Queen decided it was better to never let anyone in on the secrets of her preferred food. And she did so for an unexpected and seriously forward-thinking reason.
The clever reason was so that she didn't get served the exact same dish wherever she travelled or visited - with the fear being that once her hosts knew what she preferred, they would aim to cook it to ensure she was happy. But anyone would quickly tire of the same meal on repeat.
Meghan Markle 'to unleash her own memoirs' as Prince Harry's drops next weekThe insight was revealed by former royal correspondent Gordon Rayner, who claimed to have got the inside scoop on this from a well-placed source who worked with the royals. "As one of her staff told me, 'If she said she had a favourite meal she would never get served anything else,'" Rayner explained to The Express. However, just because the late Queen didn't open up about her favourites, doesn't mean she was totally silent about her food preferences when she was being hosted.
Reportedly, before she arrived for the meal, a member of staff would, ahead of time, ensure that the menu was to her liking. This meant checking that her hosts weren't planning on serving, for instance, the late monarch shellfish.
"The Master of the Household department will be in the reconnaissance party to tell foreign chefs not to cook anything with garlic or too much spice for fear of giving the Queen bad breath, and not to cook shellfish or anything that could cause food poisoning," he explained.
Whilst we will never know what was definitely the late Queen's favourite dinner to be served, we do know from former royal chef Darren McGrady she was seriously partial to a chocolate cake, and he used to whip it up for her regularly. "The Chocolate Biscuit Cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again every day until it's all gone," he previously explained baking website RecipePlus.
"She'll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake."
