A brave window cleaner dashed into a burning house to save three children trapped inside.

Anthony Quinlan, 42, from Huyton, was driving his van down Rathbone Road in Wavertree on Saturday, March 16, when he spotted flames leaping from the top windows of a house. Anthony said: "I was at the traffic lights and looked up and saw these balls of fire rolling off the glass.

"I realised what it was; the next minute, it really engulfed. I threw my hazard warning lights on and jumped out and there were people standing around filming on their phones. I saw movement in the windows downstairs, so I threw my hood up and ran in and started banging on the doors."

The dad-of-three found three women and three young children in the lower part of the house, and managed to get all three children and two of the women out with the help of another kind stranger, who had also rushed into the burning property, reports the Liverpool Echo.

He said: "I was screaming and shouting 'get out, get out', and grabbing kids in blankets and giving them to the women. The fire was upstairs in a front bedroom but it was blazing. All the glass was smashing and it was dripping plastic, and there was smoke everywhere. I was terrified. I came out and I was shaking like a bag of nerves.

"I didn't know if one of the ladies had got out, so I was sobbing. I thought I left her there to die, but I couldn't stay in there any more. But I heard later in the news she had got out."

The police and fire service were called to a two-storey house around 4.37pm, and put out a fire in an upstairs bedroom. They rescued one person from the house, who was then looked after by the ambulance service. The police arrested a 19 year old man from Liverpool at the scene. He was suspected of starting the fire, resisting arrest and damaging property. He was later released under investigation.

Anthony said: "When the fire engines finally arrived, it felt like forever. I heard them but couldn't see them. I had to jump into my van and move it because I had just left it in the middle of the road and blocked all the traffic." He added: "It's probably the best thing I have ever done. I'm only a window cleaner.

"I just hope the people of the house are all OK and they haven't lost anything. I just hope that they will be rehoused and I'm glad no one got hurt. But it could have been a lot worse."
