Manuel Neuer's availability for Bayern Munich's Champions League quarter-final clash with Arsenal is in doubt.

The 37-year-old has made 24 appearances for Bayern this season after successfully recovering from breaking his leg. His performances earned him a call-up to the German national team for this week's international break.

But he has now been forced to pull out of the squad for their friendly games against France and the Netherlands. The German FA announced his withdrawal on Thursday after the keeper suffered an injury in training.

They said in a statement: “Manuel Neuer left early due to a torn muscle fibre in his left adductor and is out of the two upcoming international matches. He sustained the injury in training that morning. Get well soon, Manu.”

Bayern also confirmed Neuer has been sidelined and revealed he will now return to the club to commence his recovery. They added that the diagnosis was made by the German national team's medical unit.

"Manuel Neuer has torn a muscle in his left adductor while training with the German national team," the Bundesliga giants said in a statement.

"The diagnosis was confirmed by the DFB medical unit. The FC Bayern captain will therefore miss the upcoming friendlies against France and the Netherlands and return to Munich.

Neuer's injury has put his availability for Bayern's upcoming matches into doubt. They will take on Borussia Dortmund and Heidenheim in the Bundesliga, before facing Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.

For Germany, Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen is expected to step up as first-choice, with Bernd Leno and Oliver Baumann the other goalkeeping options in Julian Nagelsmann's squad this month.

Meanwhile at Bayern, Sven Ulreich would be the next man to step into Neuer's shoes, with Daniel Peretz their other senior option. Neuer's injury comes after Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel lamented the difficulty of his side's draw.

"We certainly have the most difficult road imaginable ahead of us – now playing against one of the best teams in Europe," Tuchel said after the draw for the final knockout stages was made last week.

"Arsenal have been playing consistently at the top for two years. It’s a homogeneous, dangerous team, they score a lot of goals. But we will be prepared for it. We know our qualities."
