Kim Kardashian has shared some behind-the-scenes photos from her visit to the White House during which she discussed criminal justice reform with US Vice President Kamala Harris.
The reality TV star, who has long been an advocate of the issue, was invited for a meeting in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. Kim, 43, was seen giving a speech during the roundtable discussion, which also featured four people who received clemency from the Biden administration this week, all of whom were convicted of non-violent offences.
On her Instagram stories, the reality star shared some backstage photos taken before the meeting including a picture of a steel plaque reading "Seal of the President of the United States" and a photo of the White House. She also snapped a selfie with a kissy face and a peace sign, taken on the grounds of the White House, with the caption: "Can't wait to share all about the second chances event today at the White House. Kim fans think Rob is in star's new video & share wild theory"Is it not the sign of a civil society that we allow people a way to earn their way back, and give them the support and resources they need to do that?" The event was held a day after President Joe Biden used his clemency authority to pardon 11 people and commute the sentences of five others.
The White House said the individuals had received disproportionately long sentences and would have been given shorter sentences under current laws and policies. Talking during the meeting, Kim said: "I am super honoured to be here to hear your stories today.
"I think it's so important to share them an amplify them because there are so many people that are in your position that can use the inspiration." The Skims mogul highlighted the need of a criminal justice reform during the Trump administration as she advocated for pardons during meetings with the former president and his son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner.
So far, Biden has commuted the sentences of 129 individuals and granted pardons to 24 who committed non-violent drug offences, according to data from the Department of Justice Office of Pardon Attorney. The US president has also ben highlighting his efforts on marijuana reform, which he also mentioned in his State of the Union address in March.
It is not the first time that Harris has teamed up with celebrities to highlight administration initiatives. Last month, she met rapper Fat Joe at a roundtable with people pardoned for marijuana offences.
An official said: "Our goal here is to uplift the administration's actions, specifically our Second Chance policy. She has worked with known individuals with platforms to elevate and spotlight the work the administration has done in this instance as it relates to second chance policies."
