What exactly does an analyst do?

As the name suggests, an analyst carries out an in-depth analysis of business data to help inform future business decisions.

There are analysts across multiple sectors – from banking to intelligence to insurance to health and safety – and while each looks at very different data sets, the underlying skillset is broadly similar.

What skills will I need?

First and foremost, analytical thinking skills and the ability to read large data sets and get in-depth conclusions from them.

You have to be able to use your initiative and have strong written and verbal skills to present your findings, customer service skills are also useful as you may have multiple stakeholders to manage within the business you work in.

Given that you will often discover information that brings about business change, you’ll need to be flexible and open to change too.

And what qualifications will I need to become an analyst?

The exact entry requirements vary from sector to sector but the majority of employers will seek out candidates with a degree in a related field such as maths, business studies, economics, statistics or data analysis.

Some specialised IT roles may need an IT degree.  For business analysts, you can also consider international certification from the International Institute of Business Analysis.
