FOR many dog owners traveling can be much harder with a pet, especially if they don't have access to a car.

Whether you're a new dog owner or have had your pooch for years, it's important to know the rules regarding dogs on public transport and if your furry friend can travel along too.

Are dogs allowed on buses?

Research provided from the Kennel Club shows that 30% of owners go on public transport with their dog every year - some of which travel on a bus.

In the UK, dogs are typically allowed to travel on buses.

National Express is the only major UK bus company that doesn't allow dogs, with the exception of trained assistance dogs.

However for other companies, it is at the driver's discretion and will depend on the service provider.

The driver will take into account certain things, such as if there is already another pet on the on board when making their decision.

You should always be prepared to wait for the next bus if the driver refuses entry.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are of course allowed at all times on any route via any service provider.

Can you take dogs on the Eurostar?

Unfortunately, the Eurostar does not accept pets on board their services.

Their website states: ''There are a number of considerations and implications for transporting pets and in the interests of the comfort and safety of our customers, crews and animals we don’t accept any pets on our services.

''Eurostar is not registered as a carrier of pets and therefore, we’re unfortunately unable to make any exceptions.

''We do, however, allow guide and assistance dogs to travel with their owners and request that customers contact us at least 48 hours in advance of travel to make a request.''

Can dogs travel on any public transport?

Although buses generally permit dogs on board, not all modes of public transport do.

For example, according to the Dogs Trust coach companies usually don't accept dogs on board.

It is recommended to always check with your travel provider prior to setting off if you're unsure of the rules and regulations regarding taking your dog along with you.

Some company's may add additional charges for dog travel so make sure to check the service providers website beforehand.
