Gareth Southgate and Gary Lineker are among those in the world of sport to have sent wishes of support to Kate Middleton after the Princess of Wales confirmed a cancer diagnosis.

The Royal spoke out in a video on Friday to announce she has begun preventative chemotherapy treatment. Buckingham Palace says they will not be sharing any further private medical information, including the type of cancer. The Princess said it was a "huge shock" after an "incredibly tough couple of months".

The video statement from Kate explained that when she had abdominal surgery in January, it was not known that there was any cancer, but tests following the operation showed that cancer was present and she was advised to begin treatment. The announcement has seen the world show support for Kate - including leading figures in sport.

The Match of the Day host Lineker said: "Awful news. Wishing The Princess of Wales a full recovery." England boss Southgate said: "We've heard the news about the Princess of Wales. We wish to send our best wishes to her and her family. It was a remarkably dignified statement. We have a close relationship with the family so we're very upset to hear the news. Hopefully everything goes well."

His employers, the FA, also sent their best wishes: "Our thoughts are with the Princess of Wales, the Prince of Wales and their family. We send our very best wishes to the Princess for a full recovery."

England Rugby, where Kate is heavily involved, often sitting in the stands at Twickenham, said on social media: "Everyone at England Rugby is wishing our Patron HRH The Princess of Wales a full and speedy recovery."

Wimbledon is another British sporting location where Kate has present the winning trophies and they wished her a speedy recovery. They said: "The thoughts of everyone at the All England Club are with our Patron HRH The Princess of Wales, HRH The Prince of Wales and their family at this time. We wish The Princess of Wales the very best as she takes the time she needs to make a full recovery."

Great Britain Olympian Sam Quek said: "Wishing the Princess of Wales and all those suffering from the wretched disease that is Cancer, the very best in their own personal fights and recoveries. In her words 'Do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone'."

Prince Harry and Meghan sent a message saying: "We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace." The King and Queen were made aware of the news about the princess's health prior to Friday's announcement - and King Charles himself has also been undergoing treatment for cancer.
