The seemingly innocent actions of a character with a small role in the iconic kids’ films Toy Story have been interpreted in an bewildering way that no one saw coming.
Villians in films are generally easy to spot, especially in children’s movies. They will often look scary with sharp features and a spooky glare, have evil voices or laughs and behave in a wicked way such as cheating or stealing from the outset.
Fans of the Disney-Pixar franchise Toy Story would probably list the boisterous neighbour Sid, who loved nothing more than destroying toys and rebuilding them as a top baddie. Others will recall being haunted by Lotso - the pink bear who initially appeared to be a good guy but ended up sending the other toys to their demise. While some may recall Stinky Pete the Prospector and his dark ulterior motives.
However, it is doubtful anyone would have thought that one pretty minor character, who appeared in all the films, was actually causing the problems for the characters in the franchise, until one fan posted their crazy theory.
They believed that Andy’s mum was the root of all the issues for the main characters in the first three movies. They came to this conclusion after thinking about the plots as an adult. "As a kid, I thought Andy’s mother was nothing more than a very minor character in the films, only appearing a few times a film," they explained on Facebook group Movie and Entertainment Sphere. "She’s the kind of character who is just there because Andy needs to have a parental figure around the house. She has no relevance to the film's plot… Or does she?"
Bloke who ate 124 kebabs in 31 days says it left him 'psychologically' damagedThey went on to reveal exactly what she did in each film that has led them to the realisation that she was actually the villian: "In Toy Story, she gives Andy Buzz Lightyear, which causes Woody to get jealous and the events of the movie to take place," they stated.
"In Toy Story 2, she starts up a yard sale which results in Woody getting stolen while attempting to save another toy. In Toy Story 3, she takes the toys in the garbage bag out to the curb instead of the attic, where they should’ve gone, which is how they ended up finding their way to her car to get shipped to daycare."
The movie buff does admit that Andy’s mum is loving and caring and not outright evil but she is the cause of everything: "She is the one that gets the toys into the problems they face, making her more of an antagonist in the toy's point of view," they wrote. "To me, she went from a minor character who just loves her kids to the biggest threat to the toys' well being."
The rather wild theory was backed by others in the group, with one writing: “"She (and the movies) are probably the very reason I hoard my kid's toys."
Another questioned her parenting: "In Toy Story 2, Andy gets Jessie and Bullseye and is like 'New toys! Thanks, Mum!' As a mum, I would be like, 'Who was in my kid's room and left toys here?!' That's pretty concerning." A third joked: "CPS should've been called on Andy's mum because why was Molly sitting in the front seat in her car seat?!'. "
Others weren’t so sure though and thought it was all part of the clever plot: "But that's what makes it so brilliant that Woody is inspired by Andy's mom at the end of the third movie. He realizes, despite her being the biggest threat to him in all three films, that they also have a lot in common - they both want to look out for Andy," wrote one.
"I think she's just an agent of progress/time and that's the real threat to the toys. She's tangibly dragging Andy forward in life," said another. Someone else doubted the one of the original fan's points: "Andy put the toys into a garbage bag instead of the box marked 'Attic' that she supplied. After having given him a trash bag for trash, you can't blame her for thinking it was a rubbish bag," they said.
