The Mirror Chicken has made an eggs-traordinary comeback as Rishi Sunak chickens out of holding a general election.

The PM is refusing to say when voters will get to have their say on who is No10. Our feathered friend decided to swoop as ministers gathered in Downing Street for a Cabinet meeting.

The plucky bird greeted top Tories including Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove, Transport Secretary Mark Harper, Paymaster General John Glen and Security Minister Tom Tugendhat as they strode up Whitehall. But some ministers got their chauffeur-driven cars to take them into Downing Street to avoid the political poultry.

Mr Sunak got snippy at the weekend as he dodged questions on whether he could hold a snap poll in July.

The PM faces a drubbing at the polls on Thursday as local elections take place across England and Wales. But rather than just changing their local mayors, police leaders and councillors, many voters want to change government.

Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth urged Mr Sunak to name the date of the general election. He told the Mirror: "He is chickening out. Of course he's chickening out. He's just needs to get on with it and face the people. Whether it's June, July, October, or November, this country after 14 years of these Tories has the opportunity to change... and I think it is time for change.

"Bring on that general election. We are ready and I think the country is ready and I think it is definitely time for change... we are ready and we are hungry for it."

The Prime Minister was handed the keys of No10 in October 2022 without a single vote being cast by Tory MPs, party members or the public. He has binned the Conservatives’ 2019 election manifesto as well as the pledges he made when he ran against Liz Truss to be leader. Mr Sunak promised to lead a government with “integrity, professionalism and accountability” at every level, but he has faced a series of sleaze scandals.

More than 212,000 have now signed the Mirror’s General Election Now petition on the 38 Degrees website.
