Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling had a “non-verbal agreement”, after she had kids, the actress has revealed.
The 50-year-old actress began dating the Barbie star in 2011, after they met on the set of the indie thriller The Place Beyond The Pines. The couple have worked hard to keep their relationship under wraps from the public eye, but Eva has now admitted the agreement they made following the start of their family.
In 2014, they became parents for the first time with the arrival of daughter Esmeralda, and two years later, they added another girl, Amada, to their gorgeous brood.
Eva had taken a step back from her career after becoming a mother, but she revealed in a new interview that there was a “non-verbal agreement” between her and Ryan that she would quit acting to be a stay-at-home mother instead.

Taylor Swift seen looking cosy with Matty Healy's mum Denise Welch months ago“It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, ‘Ok, he’s going to work and I’m going to work, I’m just going to work here,’” she said on the Today show, adding that it was a “no-brainer” to halt her Hollywood career in order to care for their children.
“I’m so lucky, and I was like, ‘If I could have this time with my children,’” Eva explained, before noting that she still works, but just “didn’t act” anymore.
“I still worked, I just didn’t act because acting takes you on locations, it takes you away,” she added. Eva revealed she “pretty much stopped acting” after The Place Beyond The Pines, where she met Ryan, and said her longtime partner was “really good” at his job. “I have never experienced anything like that. The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as it can be, and that means making his co-stars as best as they can be,” she said, reflecting on working with him. “But unfortunately — or fortunately — there is only one Ryan!”
Eva also spoke about Ryan’s incredible performance of I’m Just Ken at the Oscars earlier this month, and sweetly revealed he came home after the star-studded ceremony to put their daughters to bed. “He went and he did his job. He just happens to be really good at his job, and he did it and he came home. Because that’s what it’s about. You go, you do your job the best you can and then you come home,” she shared.
While Eva rarely accompanies Ryan on the red carpet, she was backstage at the Academy Awards to support her beau, and the Crazy Stupid Love star also revealed his daughters gave him some advice after watching his dress rehearsal. “It was great. It was so fun because they came to the dress rehearsal the day before and so they were in the front row. They gave me some tips and some notes, all great notes,” he said at the SXSW festival.
Back in 2014, Eva admitted she didn’t want children until she “met and fell in love with” Ryan. “I was lucky enough to work my bum off for 20 years. I never wanted babies before until I fell in love with Ryan, and it kind of worked out to where I was 40 and having my first baby,” she shared. The award-winning actor has also heaped praise on the Hitch star for letting him pursue his career, and during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes in 2017, the La La Land star thanked Eva for looking after their family while he was at work. “While I was singing and dancing and playing piano ... my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother with his battle with cancer,” Ryan said, to wild applause from the audience.
