Ally McCoist has insisted that Arne Slot has next to no chance of winning the Premier League title in his first season with Liverpool.

Slot is set to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in the summer, when the German will leave his post after nine years in charge. The Dutchman has enjoyed a highly successful spell at Feyenoord.

He led them to the Eredivisie title last season, before winning the KNVB Cup this year. But McCoist is doubtful he will be able to lead the Reds to immediate success upon his arrival.

The Scot believes that Liverpool will lose several star players this summer, which could derail Slot's plans. And he insisted that the way they are ending the season, with one win in their last five games, does not bode well.

"I don't know what he's going to be like. He's got a good track record at Feyenoord clearly. I think it is a rather sweeping statement to say that he'll win the title in his first season with Liverpool," McCoist told talkSPORT.

"Particularly when you don't know what's going to happen at Liverpool. There might be an exodus of one or two star players and if that is the case, then you'd have to say it's going to be extremley difficult for them and him to come in and win the league in his first season.

"So at this moment in time, with the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool, I think it will be almost impossible to say that he fancied them to win the league, I really, really do. The way they've ended, the incident with Klopp and Salah, it didn't look good and it did not send out a good message."

McCoist is not the only pundit to be doubtful over Slot's chances of bringing success to Liverpool. Reds legend Jamie Carragher has also warned that the Dutchman will be making a big step up.

"What I would say from Feyenoord to Liverpool is a huge jump and I think it shows in this moment a lack of real top managers out there when you look at who Liverpool were going for," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"I don’t think it’s like Rafa Benitez coming on or Jurgen Klopp coming in. Benitez came off the back of winning two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup and Jurgen Klopp coming after winning a couple of titles with Borussia Dortmund and getting to a Champions League final.

"Liverpool were in a different space then, and that was a Liverpool team under Rafa Benitez that I was part of that was trying to qualify for the top four, the same with Jurgen Klopp when he came in.

"Liverpool are in a different area now and fancy themselves to challenge for the Premier League next season and the Champions League, they will be expected to reach the quarter-finals at least. I think it is a huge jump, he’s obviously a great coach and has a good track record with the clubs he has had so far, so we will see."
