Ruth Jones revealed her plans to train as a registrar in a move away from showbiz.

The Gavin and Stacey star is a talented actress, screenwriter and novelist but hopes to follow in the footsteps of Jools Oliver, who is training to be a midwife, and Kate Silverton, who left broadcasting to become a child therapist.

Ruth is preparing to make her debut as Mother Superior in Sister Act after previously admitting she could "never do theatre again" following a particularly nerve-wracking experience. However, as she overcomes stage fright to make her West End debut, the actress revealed she has her sights set on a different career one day.

She said: "At one point, I was going to be a solicitor, but now I’d like to be a registrar, and I’ve been thinking a lot about actually doing it. I love weddings, but I’ve been to so many where the registrar has talked in a monotone voice throughout and hasn’t looked up once – and it’s such a shame because it’s someone’s big day. I’d love to be able to make those experiences more enjoyable for people.”

Fans of the Gavin and Stacey star do not need to be alarmed as Ruth won't be shunning the spotlight just yet as she prepares to take to the stage at London's Dominion Theatre. “I honestly never thought I’d be starring in a West End musical!" Ruth told Good Housekeeping.

"The last time I did a play was in 2018, and I got so stressed out by the nerves of going on stage that I thought, ‘I can never do theatre again.’ … Fortunately, the producers were really kind and gentle – and they ended up talking me into it. It’s been a really good lesson in not putting limits on myself and not letting fear hold me back.”

Ruth also explained she has plenty of ambitions for the future for both acting roles and creating pieces herself. She added: “I’d love to star in another comedy drama. I want to write a film and I want to keep writing novels – I’ve just finished the first draft of my fourth book, which will probably come out next year. I want to learn to play the piano, too.”

Meanwhile, Ruth and her husband producer David Peet are celebrating 25 years of marriage, with the West End star crediting "having a laugh" and being understanding as the recipe for a happy relationship. She admitted she "doesn't have all the answers" but thinks "it’s always good to try to understand where the other person is coming from, to see their point of view, rather than everything being my way or the highway".
