A beloved dog is facing having its leg amputated after it was shot while out on a walk.

Owner Anthony Sassano said his pit bull mix Trinadette, who goes by Trin, was being walked by his brother in the Gage Park neighbourhood of Chicago, US, on Thursday, March 28, when she ran up to another dog and it's owner.

According to Mr Sassano, the owner panicked, pulled out a firearm and shot Trin, but the armed man said Trin bit his dog.

Trinadette was rescued by Sassano from Chicago Animal Care and Control. He said that she is friendly and excitable, telling , "I call her a baby horse, because she gallops around when she's so excited."

The shooting happened near 57th and Whipple streets at around 7:30pm. Police said that the man who shot Trin said that she had bitten his dog alongside another.

The 33-year-old allegedly told Chicago Police officers that two unleashed , one being Trin, ran and bit his dog and that's when he pulled out the gun. Trinadette is now being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. X-rays show the bullet still lodged, and bone fragments are shattered throughout.

"A gun, of all things," said Sassano. "I would have been fine with you kicking my dog because you got scared." Describing what he knows of the incident he said: "My brother was realizing the man is pulling a gun out, and then he shot Trin," said Sassano. "It hit Trin, but like, it could have been my brother."

Sassano claims his rescue "baby" will need her leg amputated and has started a fundraiser to help with her logn road to recovery. He said: "The shoulder shattered to pieces, and this part of her leg just cut," said Sassano. "She's my baby. I love her."

On a GoFundMe page Sassano is trying to raise $7,500 dollars towards vet bills. Describing what happened on the page he wrote: "She was on a play date with her uncle and Dolly. when another dog came into frame Trinadette and dolly went to say hello to the other dog and The owner of the other dog panicked and pulled out his firearm and shot Trinadette.

"She is currently stable after a gunshot wound to the shoulder fracturing the shoulder as well as her leg. She is going to need amputation as attempting to save her leg would be too far out of our ability. Anything will help as we transfer her over to a clinic that can perform the surgery.
