George Gilbey's friends set up fundraiser for funeral after heartbreaking death

Friends of George Gilbey have launched a GoFundMe appeal to help pay for the funeral of the Gogglebox star following his shock death.

Fans of Channel 4’s hit reality show were devastated this week when George plunged to his death while working on the roof of a warehouse in Essex. He was just 40 years old at the time of his death and leaves behind a young daughter whom he welcomed with Gemma Conway in 2016.

George’s heartbroken family have been pulling together to make arrangements following his sudden death - while family friend Rob Barlow has put up an appeal on GoFundMe to help cover the costs for the family. The appeal has set a target of £5,000 to cover the costs of George’s funeral and has raised over £700 since going live.

In a heartbreaking post, Rob - who works for Clacton funeral service - writes: “I’ve been asked on behalf of George’s family to set up this gofundme page so we can give George the send-off he deserves. I know his passing has come to a shock for a lot of people, he was such a big character in life and is going to be sorely missed by friends, family and all who knew him.

“I think I can safely say we all enjoyed watching him on Gogglebox, Big Brother and all his other TV appearances. Anything you can donate would be a great help to the family so thank you in advance The funeral date is still to be confirmed and will be updated in due course.”

The appeal adds: “Any funds that are left over after the funeral costs will be given to George’s 8-year-old daughter Amelie.” Rob has also spoke to The Sun on Sunday to raise awareness of the appeal, saying: “It is terribly sad what happened to George. He was a bubbly character and loved by a lot of people.”

Family friend Ricci Guarnaccio, who starred on Geordie Shore and co-starred with George on Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, said: “It is too much for [George’s mum] Linda to process at the moment but other family and friends are doing what they can to help. People are chipping in, which is great, and, if there is any money left over, it will go to George’s beautiful daughter.”

George passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a workplace accident. Essex Police released a statement following the death, which read: "We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (27 March), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury. The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene. We will continue liaising with partners including the Health and Safety Executive. A cordon remains in place at the scene."

The force's new statement, shared on Thursday afternoon, read: "As part of our ongoing investigation into the death of a man in Campfield Road, Shoebury on Wednesday 27 March, we have arrested a man in their 40s from the Witham area on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. This is a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and our enquiries are ongoing."

During Friday night's episode of Gogglebox, a tribute to George was played at the end of the episode. A message was displayed alongside a photo of George with mum Linda and stepdad Pete on the show, stating: "In loving memory George Gilbey 1984-2024." Viewers took to social media as they reacted to the sad tribute with one typing on X: "Oh the ending RIP #gogglebox."
