Receiving a surprise box full of make-up and skincare goodies is quite possibly one of the loveliest ways to kick off a new month. What better way to reset and recentre yourself than with some new beauty products that'll not only help you relax but glow on the outside too?

The item in question is Lookfantastic's May box which has just launched, featuring six brand-new products in a recyclable cardboard box. The retailer's monthly subscription edit usually includes trending products, best-sellers or new viral sensations.

The amazing thing is that the contents of this package is more often than not three times, if not more, as expensive than the cost of the box itself - which, on a monthly basis, is priced at £13 or for a one-off purchase it's £15. And it's a real treat to open.

The May beauty box contains an array of luscious skincare buys. This edit is a total self-care extravaganza with every step needed for a luxurious bath time and features brands like ESPA, Sol De Janeiro, Rodial, Hydrea London, Lanolips and Wella.

Obviously, I couldn't wait to get stuck in and set about trying all of the goodies inside as soon as I received it - especially seeing as I had only experienced two of the brands inside: Sol De Janeiro and ESPA.

As someone who suffers with super dry, painful, cracked and uncomfortable lips the majority of the time, I immediately reached for the Lanolips 101 Ointment Multi-Balm - Coconutter, £8.99, which smells heavenly.

It smells like a holiday with a gorgeous coconut scent. Being a 'multi-balm', it can be used on your skin too, including dry patches that need some love - although for me, it'll mostly be used to revive my painful lips.

I can attest that it truly lives up to its description of a 'little tube of magic' as my lips instantly felt moisturised, nourished and looked silky smooth. I will hereby be carrying it with me everywhere.

With a plethora of cleansing products, the natural next step was for me to hop in the shower and test out not only the body wash, but the hair mask, natural sea sponge and, subsequently, the Rodial Vit C papaya enzyme scrub.

The ESPA shower gel, £20, smelt just like a spa. With notes of bergamot and jasmine, it is super-luxurious and lathers up nicely. What surprised me most was that the scent remained on my skin for hours and made me feel fresh as the day went on. Maybe it's because I'm used to budget shower gels like Radox, but after showering at around 7.30am, the jasmine and bergamot fragrance still lingered on my skin at 7pm that evening. It's definitely a treat at £20 per 250ml bottle, but with that quality I'd say it's quite worth it.

Next up was the Wella Professionals Care Fusion Intense Repair Mask and while I'm not saying the results are magical, when my hair dried after using it - the volume it had was unreal. And my textured locks were super-soft.

Well, I've been on a bit of a hair journey in the last few years. I've tried a variety of things to try and get the drama back into my mane and only a few things have worked, including Only Curls- read more on that here - and Curlsmith.

But this Fusion Intense Repair Mask from Wella, £8.50 for a 75ml bottle (on sale from £10) gave my locks a good lift - without any need for product. It was gasp-inducing. The only disappointing thing about the mask is that it doesn't smell of anything. A sweet scent would have been the cherry on top.

While the mask was settling in, I decided to try out the Rodial VIT papaya scrub, which is to be used 2-3 times a week. I put a dollop of the clear formula, which is laced with small, yellow exfoliating jojoba beads and covered my face in a thin layer. Leaving it for a few minutes, as instructed, I then massaged it into my skin in circular motions, which developed it into an oil that was easy to move around my face and exfoliate. It felt very indulgent and you could feel it working to buff and smooth my skin. As I rinsed my face, I was pleased to see it looking fresh, hydrated and glowy - thanks to ingredients like vitamin C, papaya extract and hyaluronic acid.

Now, as it is recommended to be used 2-3 times a week, my guess is that for best results, it needs to be used regularly and over a period of time, your complexion will appear brighter, clearer and smoother. But for a first try, it was pretty lovely and I will certainly be going back for seconds and thirds.

While the 20ml tube costs £15 and the full size 70ml bottle is £38, I do think it's a really nice treat to get yourself if you're after a 'spa-like' product that'll give your complexion a bit of TLC.

With my face and hair having had a bit of a treat, the next product in the box that I know and love is the viral Sol De Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. This body cream smells so good and lathering it on your body in turn makes you smell sweet as pie thanks to its notes of pistachio, salted caramel and vanilla. Not to mention its formula banishes dry skin leaving it hydrated and nourished. It contains guaraná extract, which is five times as rich in caffeine as coffee, cupuaçu butter, açaí oil and coconut oil. If you can't afford the £48 price tag for a full tub of the stuff, this beauty box is a great way to stock up or try it out for the first time for just a fraction of the price.

The final product in the box is a natural sea sponge from the brand Hydrea London. While I prefer a muslin cloth and exfoliating brush when it comes to cleansing my face, the sponge claims to leave flawless results as well as contributing to smoothing out fine lines and a healthy glow.

With a unique, malleable shape, I could see how it would work well to gently exfoliate - it's good at getting around your nose (something a brush can't quite get to) because it can be scrunched up. While when dry it felt rough and I was worried it would aggravate my skin, as soon as the sponge was wet it softened up and didn't irritate my skin. Plus my face afterwards felt velvety smooth.

All in all, this box was such a self-care treat that helped me indulge in some me-time and made my skin feel amazing. Now, of course, Lookfantastic isn't the only beauty brand that offers a beauty box subscription service. Elsewhere shoppers love Glossybox's £13.50 monthly subscription box as well as Boots' limited edition beauty boxes, which rival that of Lookfantastic.
