Dolly Parton has hailed Beyonce's Jolene cover a "very bold" move.

The legendary country music singer, now 78, expressed her surprise and admiration for the 42-year-old Lemonade superstar's unique take on her cult classic song, which first appeared on Dolly's 13th studio album in 1974.

"Well, I think it was very bold of her. When they said she was gonna do Jolene, I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn't," she revealed. Despite Beyonce changing-up the song, the Dollywood star insists that she "loves what she did to" Jolene.

Speaking to E! News, Dolly revealed her thoughts: "As a songwriter, you love the fact that people do your songs no matter how they do them." Beyonce's rendition appears on Cowboy Carter. The original track is known for its portrayal of a woman pleading with another not to take her man.

Dolly commented on the lyrical changes, "She wasn't gonna go beg some other woman like I did. Don't steal my man.' 'S***, get out here, b****. You ain't stealin' mine! I was very proud of her album." She continued, praising Beyonce's foray into country music and adding, "I thought she did a great job in country music, and I thought it was great.

"And I was just happy she did Jolene. I, of course, would have loved to have heard how she would have done it in its original way. But of course, you know, it's Beyonce. Yeah, her life is different than mine," she continued to the outlet.

Beyonce's rewritten lyrics seem to directly reference Jay Z, with whom she shares three children, Blue Ivy, 12, and her 6-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir Carter, as she sings over guitar strumming: "We’ve been deep in love for 20 years, I raised that man, I raised his kids, I know that man better than he knows himself."

Beyonce and Jay Z, 54, have been together for 24 years, having started dating in 2000 when Beyonce was still in Destiny's Child. The couple wed in 2008, and Beyonce previously said of the upcoming album: "I hope that you can hear my heart and soul."

Beyonce has said of the record: "This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.

"It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history."
