A new global block of countries Russia, North Korea, with support of China, is waging war on the West in every way but open military conflict, an expert has warned.

It is part of ongoing attempts to weaken the UK, US and their allies and create a new "common vision of the future of the world."

The US, South Korea and others have steadfastly accused North Korea of supplying artillery, missiles and other conventional weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine in return for advanced military technologies and economic aid. Both North Korea and Russia have repeatedly dismissed that.

Iran has been accused of providing equipment to Russia to develop military drones and even juggernaut China has been accused of providing components to develop weapons.

Speaking to the , author and Russia expert Keir Giles explained the dynamics of this new global struggle. He said: "The West should have been worried about this for quite some time already. Whether you call it an alliance, or partnership or just an alignment. It is a group of countries that have a common vision of the future of the world that they want and it's a future that puts our security and prosperity in danger because they see the West as the main obstacle to achieving it."

He continued: "The alignment of blocks of countries which wish to do us harm and are cooperating to do so. China is fueling the Russian war machine. Definitely with components and microprocessors supplies. Possibly with actual dual use equipment that can be used for war purposes.

"And of course Iran and North Korea have long been the suppliers to Russia for its war on Ukraine. NK with artillery shells primarily, Iran with drones and now transferring the technology in order to build drones in Russia itself. All of this is in the shared interest of these countries because they see Russia weakening the military power of their adversaries led by the US."

But Mr Giles is reluctant to describe it as a new Cold War. He said: "When you say Cold War, people still today have an image of how that worked which is different to what we're dealing with today. People think of the 1980s. But there's a great deal more fields of confrontation today that simply weren't a factor in the Cold War.

"Somethings don't change but other things are sufficiently different that's worth using a new terminology to explain what's going on. The key point is getting the message across that there are countries that are waging war with us in every way except for open military conflict. Let's call it world conflict, because that's what it is."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has previously met with President Vladimir Putin at a cosmodrome in Russia’s Far East for talks that are likely to focus on Russia’s desire to buy ammunition to refill reserves drained by its war in Ukraine.

Mr Giles said: "The vast quantities of Soviet compatible ammunition that is being pulled out of North Korean warehouses and shipped across Russia to deliver to Ukraine. But reportedly of very variable quality. So the shell hunger conversation of a few months ago was being driven by the coalition of countries backing Ukraine throttling supplies to Ukraine while the taps were open from North Korea to flood as much ammunition to Russia as they could handle.

"Russia was burning through stocks faster than they could replenish them from their own warehouses or manufacture them. It does indicate a shortcoming in Russia's potential to wage war but it could have been a temporary shortcoming. It doesn't matter where the shells come from in the end or what their reliability rate is if they can just saturate Ukrainian positions with artillery or glide bombs and achieve their objectives in ways which are costly and inelegant but still work.

"It's attritional warfare. That's exactly what Russia is been planning on. They can cope with a greater level of attrition in terms of casualties, losses, the equipment that's been destroyed, compared with what Ukraine can."
