Fernandes stunned the club last month by hinting he could quit after the Euros for a fresh challenge.
The FA Cup winner said he would wait until after the tournament was over before making a final decision on his future.
But he dropped a worrying hint his Old Trafford spell could be approaching an end as he warned the club to match his ambition.
He wrote in a piece for The Players' Tribune: "I just want my expectations to fit with the expectations of the club.

"If you go talk to any fan, they will tell you the same thing. We want to compete for the league.
