Donald Trump showed "purring smugness" and "ego-fuelled confidence" while holding rallies "in front of audiences he loves" during a day off from his hush money trial, a body language expert has said.

The former US president, who is now running for a second term in the White House, held campaign rallies in Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday. These two states could be key to the outcome of the election in November.

It was an off day from the court in Trump's criminal trial in New York, with witness testimony resuming today. Body language expert Judi James told The Mirror that Trump showed confidence and smugness during the rally, as his gestures and attitude show.

According to the expert, the former president also appears to be "keen to blow away" the pressures of his trials with his "body language performances". Ms James said: "Out of the courtroom and back in front of the audiences he loves, Trump’s body language signals of purring smugness and high-octane ego-fuelled confidence returned here.

"His chest is puffed again and his hands held with palms turned outward towards his fans in a gesture of sharing and openness. The puffing and blowing of his cheeks is replaced by a broad, winning beam and the suggestion that he is a man brought down by the pressures of his trials is an idea that he seems keen to blow away here in these body language performances."

Trump's first stop was in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a swing state he won by less than a percentage point in 2016, and lost by less than a percentage point to President Joe Biden in 2020. He was welcomed by 1,200 of his supporters at the Waukesha County Expo Center for a rally.

During the rally, he promised to improve the economy if he is elected president later this year, saying: "The choice for Wisconsin is simple: If you want lower prices, then you have no choice than to vote for one person, Donald J. Trump. When I'm in the White House, the Biden economic bust will be replaced by the Trump economic boom."

He also mentioned the recent protests around college campuses in the US which are calling for an end to Israel's attacks in Gaza, which have been ongoing since October 2023. He called on schools to "vanquish the radicals and take back our campuses for all of the normal students" while making inflammatory remarks about refugees as part of his hardline immigration views.

And the former president was blasted after claiming London is "unrecognisable" after Europe "opened its door to jihad." The former president made the incendiary remarks in Wisconsin where he claimed he would "never" allow the same situation in the US. He told supporters: "We've seen what happened when Europe opened its doors to jihad. Look at Paris, look at London, they're no longer recognisable.

"I'm gonna get myself into a lot of trouble with the folks in Paris and the folks in London, but you know what, that's the fact. They are no longer recognisable and we can't let that happen to our country."

Sadiq Khan responded to the controversial comments by saying it was the perfect opportunity in the local elections to choose "hope over fear." He said: "Today is an opportunity to show Donald Trump and my Tory opponent that London will always choose hope over fear and unity over division. This election will be close. Polls are open until 10pm this evening and you will need photo ID to vote."

During the rally in Michigan, Trump decried a "fake trial" in New York and said the judge was unconstitutionally stopping him from speaking. He said: "As you know, I have come here today from New York City, where I'm being forced to sit for days on end in a kangaroo courtroom with a corrupt and conflicted judge enduring a Biden sideshow trial, at the hands of a Marxist District Attorney, Soros-backed, who's taking orders from the Biden administration."
