Manchester United fans have pointed out that the decision not to keep Marcel Sabitzer at Old Trafford was a 'massive mistake' after his performance in the Champions League final.

Sabitzer spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at the Red Devils after signing him from Bayern Munich. During his time at United, Sabitzer won the FA Cup and played an important role in them finishing third, making 18 appearances and directly contributing to four goals.

The Austrian returned to Bayern last summer but made an abrupt exit, securing a move to Borussia Dortmund in July 2023 on a four-year contract. The 30-year-old has impressed since his move to Dortmund, scoring six times and picking up nine assists in 40 appearances.

He also put in a starring display at Wembley on Saturday, even though Dortmund fell short and suffered a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid. That has since see fans take to social media and say that United should have signed Sabitzer on a permanent deal, while others were sad to see him in tears at full-time.

"We should have kept Sabitzer," one fan said. Someone else added: "Sending Sancho on loan is not the mistake, it’s not signing Sabitzer [that] is a massive mistake."

A third claimed: "How on earth did United not keep Sabitzer, though?" Another tweeted: "For what it's worth, I would've loved it if Sabitzer lifted that trophy.

While a fifth wrote: "Cheer up, Sabitzer, cheer up… Gotta feel for Dortmund, they will have nightmares for not taking their chances." Somebody else posted: "Happy for Madrid, sad to see Sabitzer sad."

A seventh said: "If ever there was a player United should’ve kept, it was Sabitzer… midfield Swiss knife with [the] end product." Another admitted: "Feel bad for Sabitzer. Would have been nice to see him win the UCL. Was really handy for us last season."

Dortmund were impressive for the most part against Real, dominating the first-half in particular and would have been kicking themselves for not getting their noses in front. Carlo Ancelotti's side punished them for missing chance after chance with Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr scoring to seal the win.

Despite this, Dortmund boss Edin Terzic cut an upbeat mood. Speaking after the game, Terzić said: "We lured almost 100,000 people to London with the belief that we would win this game.

"We also have one wish: even if it gets tough and doesn’t work out right away, that you don’t start to doubt immediately after the first experience that you would have wished differently.

“We need this belief. Only with this belief will success and self-confidence emerge. And that is the clear mission from tomorrow."
