Conor McGregor's theory about UFC champion confirmed after title defence

Conor McGregor's claim that UFC champion Islam Makhachev had a staph infection before his fight with Dustin Poirier has been confirmed.

Makhachev defended his lightweight world title by tapping out Poirier in their world title fight at UFC 302 this past weekend. Fans feared that Makhachev was suffering from a suspected staph infection just days out from the fight and McGregor had the same view as he lashed out at the Russian in an X-rated tweet.

"Staph again. This inbred however lives with Staph. This team is infested, make no mistake. Scruff balls. Whatever ya’s are into, I suppose. He still subs Dustin in the 1st," McGregor tweeted. Makhachev's trainer Javier Mendez has now revealed that McGregor was right as the Russian was battling a staph infection before his recent win.

“When I got to camp, almost a month ago, Islam was not necessarily 100 percent training because he had a nasty staph infection and this camp was a very bad camp for him. From my perspective because I wasn't there at the beginning of the camp, I was there at the end. It was a great camp, he told Red Corner MMA.

"Especially when Khabib [Nurmagomedov] showed up everything got better, Khabib is the leader and I'm the mentor. Everything went perfect, and the staph infection did not affect him whatsoever. He was not on antibiotics the week of the fight so we cannot use that as anything, he was perfectly fine. It’s kind of funny how little simple things that people notice changes things."

Mendez noted that Makhachev's staph infection was affecting him several weeks ago, rather than when fans spotted it during fight week. "Conor goes on a rant and starts to create drama with Islam, which is good because he is the kind of guy you want to root against or root for regardless, everybody wants to see him," he added.

"I want to see him get beat by Islam, so him what he's doing is causing a lot of attention. There wouldn't be nothing better for me and Khabib to see Islam have a fight with him [McGregor] somewhere down the line." McGregor makes his return against Michael Chandler on June 29 and has been offered a world title shot if he beats the American.
