Snow will fall this week in the UK - scenes rarely seen in June - the Met Office has confirmed.
Annie Shuttleworth, meteorologist with the service, delivered the latest forecast in a YouTube video today, in which she said temperatures will plunge so much snow is expected across parts of Scotland on Wednesday.
The Mirror had told earlier this week snow is likely, and now the Met Office has added further confidence to this forecast. Ms Shuttleworth said: "Cold air continues to dive south and eastwards through the night on Tuesday night into Wednesday and this occluded front brings a focus of some quite heavy showers through Wednesday morning, and those showers could fall as snow over the high ground of Scotland, which is not that typical for early summer but isn't completely unusual. Snow is only really expected over and above 600 meters in Scotland."
Weather maps produced by InMeteo suggest it will be as cold as 1C overnight tonight in the Scottish Highlands. It will remain cold for the time of year across the country, particularly under heavy cloud in Northwest England.

Temperatures will be colder than average for June on Thursday and Friday though too, as much as 9C lower than usual in Scotland. In parts of northern England, it will be around 6C colder than average for the time of year, the Met Office says.

Showers will work their way eastwards on Thursday and Friday and these will be thundery across Cumbria and Lancashire at times, forecasters understand. It is, at the moment, a stark change to last month, which the Met Office confirmed today was the warmest May on record.
The warmest day of the year so far was Saturday May 10 when the mercury hit 25.9C in Herstmonceux, East Sussex. Yet, as the Mirror accurately reported, the rest of the month was rather unsettled and wet - with frequent thunderstorms across southern counties.
