Air fryers have quickly become a must-have in British households - but can be a nightmare to clean.

The versatile little cookers, which use less energy in comparison to a conventional oven, are easy to store away and are great for whipping up a late-night snack like these crispy wedges. But, stubborn grease and burnt food can easily get etched onto the basket, which can be difficult to remove.

If your air fryer is looking a little worse for wear, fans of cleaning ace Mrs Hinch are raving about a 9p hack that will leave your device looking brand new once more.

Posting on the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one user asked whether the hack of using a dishwasher tablet in your air fryer basket and letting it 'soak' off the grim actually works. From the comments section, it's clear the viral tip definitely does do the trick.

"I do it all the time with hot water leave to soak and wash next morning," one person wrote. Another commented: "I have and yes it does work. It's also good for lots of burnt-on food," - adding that the dirt lifts within five minutes 'without scrubbing'.

You can buy dishwasher tablets from a slew of supermarkets and online retailers such as Poundland - which is selling 42 Fairy Platinum Plus All-in-One Dishwasher Tablets for just £4. This works out at just 9p per clean.

Earlier this year, cleaning content creator Ciara Turley went viral after showing off her 'toxic free cleaning hack' after warning Brits not to heat up washing up liquid and water in the air fryer to melt grease away. Instead, Turley recommends adding a 'squirt' of washing-up liquid in the air fryer basket (removed from the appliance completely) as well as a tablespoon of baking powder. She then fills the basket up with boiling water and leaves it alone for 20 minutes.

"I do this all the time, it's brilliant," one person raved in the comments section. "Just doing this now! Great way for a deep clean," another commented. While a third added: "This is amazing. Makes it so easy to clean [my] air fryer." You can buy baking powder from most supermarkets, but if you prefer shopping online you can buy a pack of two Dr Oetker Baking Powder for £5.99 and a pack of three Fairy Original Washing Up Liquids for £9.29 on Amazon.
