Sarah Ferguson has shared the touching words of advice she received from the late Queen prior to her death in September 2022.
Despite the fact that her marriage to Prince Andrew came to an end in 1996, Sarah remained close to the monarch, once stating that she had been "more of a mother to me than my mother".
Now, in a new interview, Sarah has revealed the poignant words the Queen shared with her, which ultimately helped her develop as a person and deal with her own personal struggles.
She told HELLO!: "One of the only people who saw me properly was the Queen [late Elizabeth II] and before she died, she said: 'Sarah, being yourself is enough.'
"I haven't shown my huge personality properly, because I've tried to keep it under the cushion. 'It's too much,' or: 'Shut up, no one wants to hear from you.' I remember my father telling me: 'You're a bore.' And now I'm just not excusing myself any more."
Meghan Markle 'to unleash her own memoirs' as Prince Harry's drops next weekPart of Sarah's closeness with the late Queen stems from her strained relationship with her own mother. When she was a child, her mother, Susan Barrantes, divorced her father and moved to Argentina with a new husband, professional polo player Héctor Barrantes. Tragically, she died in a car crash in 1998.
Speaking on the Tea with Twiggy podcast in 2021, hosted by the former British model, Sarah described the Queen as her "greatest mentor" and the "person who believes in me."
"I think to myself that honestly, my mother-in-law has been more of a mother to me than my mother. [She's] never faltered," the Duchess noted. "I absolutely think there is no greater mentor. The consistency of Her Majesty has been a great honour. A huge honour. Makes me want to cry."
And in September 2023, Sarah marked the first anniversary of the Queen's passing with a touching tribute. "You were a wonderful friend, a mentor, a second mother to me and grandmother to my daughters who share so much of your courage and heart," she said. "You will always be loved and missed by our family and our nation."
It's been a difficult time for Sarah who - like King Charles and Princess Kate - has faced her own cancer battle.
The 64-year-old revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2023 and underwent a mastectomy to have the cancer removed. Following the operation, Sarah later underwent a reconstruction procedure, but during the surgery doctors noticed an unusual skin lesion which was sadly later identified as malignant melanoma. Happily, she has revealed that the cancer has been removed.
She told HELLO!: "I have always brought up my girls to be so honest and frank that they know I'm going to tell it to them straight, however difficult it is. So when they said, 'Mummy, tell us the absolute truth — have they got all the cancer out?' and the answer was yes, they knew they were safe."
