A pair of conjoined twins, with differing sexualities, have decided to give a candid insight into their lives in order to 'demystify' the phenomenon.

Conjoined twins are two babies who are born physically connected to each other. It's a very rare phenomenon, but occurs about one in every 500,000 live births in the UK. Mia and Lia (not their real names) decided they wanted to give an insight into their lives after 'interest spiked' following the news conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel had tied the knot with Josh Bowling.

The 19-year-old women, who claim to be connected at the abdomen, took to Reddit to answer any questions people had about their lives, revealing they wanted to give "consented" answers and be able to lead the narrative.

In the post, they revealed that one of them identifies as straight, while the other a lesbian, and candidly shared, in order to "demystify" the situation for people, that they "don't have sex". The twins, who say they share "the same vagina", added: "I imagine there would be almost no way to have sex privately from one another. But that's different for twins that have different vaginas/penises."

The twins claimed they had decided very early on that despite having "sexual urges", they wouldn't be having sex with anyone due to the risks associated with pregnancy. They wrote: "While both me and my sister have sexual urges and both experience arousal, we agreed from an early age on that we would not have sex as it would be 1. very uncomfortable for the both of us and 2. the risk of pregnancy is too great. If we got pregnant there's a good chance we would die.

"However, we will still be intimate with our partners. I would kiss and hug and cuddle with my girlfriend. But she was asexual conveniently so it was not an issue for us.

"But, this is just what works for us. Other conjoined twins, ie Abby and Brittany, may have more intimate interactions or less, normally yes sex alongside your sibling is weird being a conjoined twin is a completely different experience. What works for them is good."

However, they said they had tried to "masturbate in the past", but they had agreed not to as it was "too uncomfortable" for the pair. Detailing more about the uncomfortable nature of it, they said: "Imagine someone touching your shoulder, incessantly. It would be pretty annoying and weird right? That's what it's like if Lia touches our vagina, it feels like someone messing around with your body."

Sharing more about their condition, the anonymous women claimed: "Okay so background information! Our names are Mia and Lia (not our real names but similar). We are 19 years old. We are connected at the abdomen, so two different brains, two hearts, four(ish) lungs (our left and right lungs respectively are kind of fused so it's more like a 3rd lung than a 4th), two livers, two stomachs, and then below that we share our intestines, bladder, and our reproductive system.

"So yes, the same vagina! We each have one arm and leg we can control respectively."

In the post, they detailed how their bodies are joined, and gave eye-opening insights into who held the greater strengths. The post read: "Lia's lungs have been compressed by my body and on top of that she has severe scoliosis in her spine."

They claimed to have had two ribs removed in order to relieve pressure on Lia's lungs. They also shared that due to a blood clot that had formed in Lia's arm, she now has "permanent severe chronic pain".

Due to that, it is normally Mia who does the "texting and writing and doing stuff with our arms". They added: "We do drive, but I'm [Mia] the only one use drives. I drive one handed obviously [...]."

Speaking about self acceptance, Mia explained that they "just got on with things pretty much," adding: "We accepted this is the way we are from an early age. To quote George Schappell 'Why fix what's not broken?'."

George and Lori Schappell, who had partially fused skulls, were the oldest living conjoined twins, who saddly passed away at the age of 62 in April 2024.
