When it comes to redecorating, you have to strip a room back to its bare bones to be able to see what you're working with. That's exactly how one man approached his project - but he wasn't expecting to come across a hidden note from his previous homeowner in the process.

The man has taken to Reddit to share how he ripped up the carpet and discovered a brutally honest note written by a man called Kelroy on March 27, 2001. It reads: "Kelroy was here. 27/3/01. Ugly as hell but what a magnificent carpet layer." While most users complemented Kelroy's handiwork, others commented on the fact that 2001 doesn't seem long enough to ago to be classed as a "blast from the past".

One user said: "Kelroy, you're awesome! As someone who renovates many houses, ' Easter eggs ' always make my day.

"Most aren't this positive though. I had one house that previously had alcoholic tenants - I kept finding hidden bottles of vodka for two years."

Another user added: "It makes me feel incredibly old that 2001 can be seen as looking into the past. I have underpants that are older than this message."

A third user said: "2001 isn't long ago in the grand scheme of things but just think about how much the world has changed since he scribbled the message.

"It's pre 9/11, Iraq War, Facebook, YouTube, phones with more computing power than the entire Apollo space program, Mickey Rooney still alive."

Other users took the opportunity to share stories about the secret messages they have either found or left in their homes.

One user said: "When I was a kid, my parents bought a house in 1971 that was built in 1950.

"In 1972, they changed the wallpaper in the hallways and to our delight, we uncovered a bunch of drawings and messages from the family that moved out.

"Of course, my younger brother and I added to the mural with our own contributions.

"The wallpaper my parents applied was still there in 2003 when the house was sold to the next family.

"They have done a ton of changes on the outside so I imagine they have made upgrades on the interior too.

"I hope their kids enjoyed the many years of messages added a third generation's worth too."

Another user added: "I was renovating this Victorian house built in 1888 where I live in England when I was working with my dad a few years back.

"I was stripping some wallpaper off and I found the words: 'Alfred Foster, 1889' written in what appeared to be red crayon on the wall alongside the stairs.

"It's such an exciting moment as it looked like it was written just a few days back as it was still very visible."

One more user said: "When I redid my kitchen last year I found a note written on the underside of the counter, from February 1985 that said, 'If you paint the cupboards, I will come back and haunt you!'

"I didn't repaint, they are a nice simple glass fronted pine - and I'm lazy."
