Countryfile's Adam Henson is set to host a heartwarming lambing season special on BBC One tonight, giving viewers an intimate look at life on his Cotswolds farm.

The 58-year-old presenter will be seen assisting with the birth of lambs and checking in on his menagerie, including Highland calves, Gloucester old spot piglets, and a new Exmoor pony foal. Fans of the show can also expect a nostalgic trip down memory lane with archive footage from past lambing seasons.

But behind the scenes, Adam has faced personal challenges. He married his partner Charlie in a private ceremony during the Covid-19 pandemic after she was diagnosed with stage one pancreatic cancer over Christmas 2020. With a "very low" survival rate and major surgery on the horizon, the couple decided to tie the knot amidst the health scare.

Charlie opened up about her diagnosis to the Telegraph, revealing the grim prognosis: "I was told the scan showed a 4.5cm growth on my pancreas, located in a difficult position and it was very serious.", reports the Express. She knew the odds were against her, as she stated: "I knew that this type of cancer had a very low survival rate just five per cent."

In the same interview, Adam shared: "Yes, we were told, it is cancer, but there is a possibility it could be a rare, slow-growing type of neuroendocrine tumour, which in some cases may be treatable."

The couple was heartbroken to learn that only two percent of such cases are neuroendocrine, and even then, treatment would be challenging due to the tumour's size and location. Adam disclosed: "There was a distinct possibility all they could do was offer palliative care."

When asked about his marriage, it emerged that the tough diagnosis prompted Charlie to take a significant step. She expressed to the Mirror: "After 28 years together you do get a bit complacent, but getting married was suddenly really important - we didn't know how long we had left, and I wanted Adam to know I was committed to him."

The pair divulged that Charlie's mother and sisters wasted no time, securing the earliest date for the nuptials, which unfolded on 9 September 2021 at the Stroud Register Office, with Charlie's critical operation scheduled for the following day. Reflecting on their special day, Adam recounted: "There were a lot of tears and a lot of emotion in the room. Charlie wore an ivory dress and looked stunning when she walked in with her mum."

Adam also recalled the intensity of their wedding vows, saying: "We were both crying through the vows, and the next very emotional time for me was giving a speech at the reception. I talked about all the lovely things we'd done, how strong we were together, how we were going through some very, very difficult times - but we would come out the other side."

The operation was a success, and Charlie spent three days in intensive care before she began her journey to recovery. She made her comeback to work towards the end of last year.
