IN came the heroes — some in wheelchairs, some still walking unaided — to take their final salute for changing the course of history a lifetime ago.

The fact Labour would not need to appease Home Counties NIMBYs gives us hope that the building revolution the Tories failed to bring about might yet happen under a Labour Government.
Their proposed Freedom To Buy scheme is a good shout too, even if it is just an existing Tory idea rebranded.
It would underwrite a chunk of a buyer’s mortgage, slashing the deposit they would need. That’s a big boost for those without well-heeled parents to rely on. And Labour would make it permanent, so more lenders would commit.
On its own, though, making buying easier merely fuels the market, driving prices yet higher. Getting vast numbers of homes built, on brownfield sites and even on the scabbier parcels of Green Belt, is paramount.
So is driving down the immigration totals which dwarf the properties available.
