Wolves were the only club to vote in favour of scrapping VAR - ultimately losing out 19-1 with the system here to stay.
The Molineux outfit had put forward a proposal to rid of the video system, which has been in place since the 2019/20 season. It was therefore a discussion point at the Premier League 's annual general meeting with the decision being put to the clubs. It would've needed 14 votes to get passed.
It is understood that Wolves were adamant they wanted to pursue it even though they anticipated a heavy defeat, which proved to be the case. Their 19 top flight rivals all chose to keep VAR in place, although there is an acceptance it needs improving.
One top flight club said in the lead up to the meeting that the VAR system at the moment "isn’t working" and there "clearly are issues".
When Wolves put forward their argument they said: "After five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future. Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards.”
Premier League odds and betting tipsAfter the vote a statement was released by the Premier League, whereby they accepted that changes were necessary as they pinpointed areas to target. It read: "As part of thorough discussions at the Annual General Meeting, it was agreed that PGMOL, the Premier League and clubs all have important roles to play in improving the system and its reputation. As part of ongoing work to improve VAR, six key areas were focused on as part of discussions with clubs."
Maintaining a high threshold for intervening is among the areas they want to target. A reduction in delays have also been cited as a key work on, but they anticipate this will be aided by the introduction of the semi-automated offside system.
Improving the fan experience is another area that improvements can be made, which can be helped with through a reduction in the delays, in-stadium announcements from referees after a VAR results in the changing of a decision.
