Vladimir Putin today posed as the saviour of the world in the Kremlin’s latest twisted propaganda blitz.

The 71-year-old dictator sat soaking in the unctuous homage on stage as one of his own close advisers told him he had been sent by God to rescue humanity. Professor Sergei Karaganov, 71, a foreign policy guru for Putin, has publicly advised the Russian ruler to unleash a tactical - or battlefield - nuclear strike as a warning to the West.

‌Perhaps because of this threat he was chosen as moderator of Putin’s most significant appearance at the forum during which the dictator also compared himself to Russia’s most famous emperor, Peter the Great. In an address scripted by the Kremlin, Karaganda told Putin - who has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands Russian and Ukrainian people in the current war: “I clearly remember 1998-99 when our country was on the edge…of falling apart. The situation was dire.

“I remember me and my comrades fighting without any hope left and at some point God Almighty took pity on us [and Putin arrived]. Now Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin] you have a difficult task. Not only to win, but also to save the world which is sliding and being pushed into a World War.”

‌Critics would argue it is Putin who has plunged the world on the edge of an abyss with his bloody and colonial invasion of sovereign independent Ukraine. But in a propaganda video accompanying Putin’s latest grandstanding appearance at Russia’s version of Davos - the St Petersburg International Economic Forum - blamed the US and Britain for the ills of the world.‌

“The colonial march of the West has not stopped,” it warned. “The plunder has taken even more hypocritical forms of dollar dependence.”

‌As Putin seeks to bring Ukraine under his thrall, he accused the West of a philosophy of: “We made the rules, you must obey them. That's the way it has always been and will always be, they demanded.”

‌The propaganda video went on, ignoring the brutal killing and use of rape by his troops in Ukraine, declaring: “But a new time has come. The time of justice, fairness, equality. Russia is a civilised state.”

Russia was the only country in the world to repel invasion attempts, defending its borders, people and traditions, the video claimed. “It was Russia who led the struggle of nations for a new world order at the beginning of the 21st century.

“Russia refused to follow the rules invented by someone, to obediently play along with colonisers. Russia inspired peoples with the ideas of a multipolar world.”

Karaganov asked Putin to define the system he is creating in Russia, then answered the question on behalf of the dictator, admitting it was ‘authoritarian’.

“What kind of model are we building? Do we know? I would say ‘authoritarian social capitalism’ is ideal for Russia, so that it is clear where we are going,” said the professor.

“We are supposedly following the right path. Previously we were following the liberal path…thank God, the government started doing something and we are proud, but it started doing something a bit too late.”

Putin said the Chinese model was superior to the West’s, but in Russia “we must always proceed from our own realities; real development is very important, to understand what works effectively in our society.” In a later exchange, the unctuous Karaganov asked Putin: “Would you like to repeat the success of Peter the Great? He was successful.”

Putin did not demur at the comparison, only pointing out times were different. “Peter was a historical figure, a tsar of all Russia, and then the Emperor,” said the former KGB spy. "It was a different environment, conditions and goals.”

Karaganov last year told Putin to use nuclear weapons to smash “the will of the West”, and in so doing halt World War Three. Putin “will have to hit a group of targets in a number of countries in order to bring those who have lost their minds to their senses,” he advocated.

“This is a morally terrible choice - we use the weapons of God, dooming ourselves to severe spiritual losses. But if this is not done, not only Russia may perish, but, most likely, the entire human civilisation will end. We will have to make this choice.”

Karaganda was later exposed as owning a secret luxury bolthole apartment in the heart of Venice. In other addresses to the forum, Putin has denied he poses a threat to the West, denying he wants to invade any NATO territory, while also saying he could unleash nuclear missiles if Russian sovereignty is threatened.
