Gary Lineker has reignited his feud with Sir Alex Ferguson – saying he "doesn't care" what the legendary Manchester United boss thinks.

The Match of the Day presenter, 63, had a public falling out with Fergie during his time in charge at Old Trafford. Their relationship has never been the same since.

And the frosty nature of it was brought up in the latest episode of the The Rest Is Football podcast, which Lineker hosts alongside his BBC colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. They regularly play games of 'start, bench, sell'.

Lineker recalled one given to him by a fan as he said: "Somebody came to me last night, you know sometimes you have people who've bought an auction item, they come into Match of the Day and they get a little tour and watch the programme.

"We had four guys last night and one of them said 'ah I love the podcast, I've got one for you'. And he said, let me remember who it was for you, he said, it was Sir Alex Ferguson, Pep Guardiola, Bobby Robson.

"And I thought to myself 'right, I would never want to, I couldn't possibly get rid of Bobby Robson, I just wouldn't'. So I think I'd go Pep Guardiola (keep), Bobby Robson (bench) and then Sir Alex Ferguson (sell), because I never got on with him anyway so I don't care what he thinks."

When pressed by Richards about not getting on with Ferguson, Lineker went on to add: "He's had a few jibes at me over the years. He was a bit anti-BBC I think, but anyway."

The origins of their disagreement was a magazine interview that the former England striker did in the late noughties. He spoke about managers being annoyed after games and thinking the media are against them, later discussing Sir Alex.

But Lineker claims those quotes were then intertwined to make it look like they were connected. He tried to explain that to the Red Devils boss, who didn't believe him.

Fergie then had an interview of his own with Sir David Frost in 2008, claiming Lineker was "not whiter than white like they all think" and he had "super-injunctions all over the place" – which he denied.

The pair were both speakers at Sir Bobby Robson's memorial the following year and kept it cordial. But Ferguson allegedly snubbed Lineker's attempt at a handshake at his local restaurant Riva a few years ago, clearly still not seeing eye-to-eye over 15 years on.

The BBC were banned from interviewing him at the time. Ferguson refused to speak to them for seven years, from 2004 to 2011, after they aired a documentary about his agent son Jason that he said portrayed him incorrectly.
