With temperatures set to soar up to an impressive 26-degrees across some parts of the UK this weekend, investing in a fan that’s designed to keep you and your space as cool as possible should be at the top of your priority list.

Like our houses, us Brits aren't necessarily built to cope well with too much heat, but a blast of cool air from the right fan can make all the difference.

From futuristic bladeless designs to fans that will trap allergens and purify the air around you at the same time, they've come a relatively long way.

We've rounded up some of the best fans of 2024 that you can get hold of in time for when the hot weather arrives this weekend, and they include favourites from big names like Dyson and Tower as well as less expensive options to suit all budgets.

Having tested almost all the Dyson fans out there, this one definitely takes the win for us. As well as offering powerful cooling abilities, the fan “captures gases and 99.9 per cent of particles as small as 0.1 microns”, meaning it purifies and cools the air, making it ideal for allergy sufferers.

The fan can be turned on and off easily using the power button found at the top of the fan and it features a huge range of settings, including speed, oscillation and air direction which can be controlled with the included remote. Like most Dyson fans, we were impressed with its low noise levels, but to take it one step further, there’s even an ultra-quiet night mode which is perfect for light sleepers.

How to choose the right fan:

When choosing a fan, the first thing to consider is the size of the area that you want to cool. For example, if you're working from home and require a fan to keep you cool during the day, a small desktop fan will suffice. Similarly, if you're out and about and in need of a quick blast of cool air, a handheld fan is the perfect tool for the job.

However, if you need to cool your living area or bedroom, you're going to need a larger fan that is capable of pushing air around these larger spaces such as a tower, pedestal or floor fan.

Is there a fan that blows cold air?

It goes without saying that a fan is in no way similar to an air conditioning unit. Whereas air conditioners actually cool the air itself, fans simply circulate and move the air around the room and keep you cool by evaporating sweat from your skin.

    Are Dyson fans worth it?

Depending on your priorities and budget, Dyson fans can absolutely be worth the investment. If you suffer from allergies, fans such as the Dyson Purifier Cool are able to reduce pollutants and improve air quality in your home while cooling you down at the same time.

They also look great, are easy to clean and can quickly become real statement pieces inside your home. That said, however, if you're just looking for a basic fan to keep you cool, there are certainly cheaper options available - more on those later.

    Things to look out for:

Size: While pedestal fans max out at around 16 inches, floor fans can be anywhere between 18-20 inches. Larger fans are able to circulate more air, which is not only more efficient but means they are able to cool larger spaces more effectively.

Blades: The more blades a fan has, the more effective it will be at pushing the air around a room. Metal blades are more robust and therefore better at doing this than plastic ones.

Noise: If you're planning on using the fan in your bedroom, the quieter the better. While it's next to impossible to build a completely silent fan, there

Features: While features such as oscillation and height adjustment are important, many fans have additional features such as auto shut-offs, remote controls and even built-in air purifiers. If you're looking for a fan that does a bit more than what it says on the tin, there are plenty of high-tech options available.

    Types of fans:

Tower fans: Sturdy and sleek, these thin cooling units come with an oscillating feature and are perfect for cooling larger areas without taking up too much space although certain models can be noisy.

Pedestal fan: These traditional, jack of all trades can be used in any room. Most have built-in speed and height adjustments and an oscillating feature.

Floor fan: Large and sturdy, floor fans are also typically more powerful than other types of fan. Look for one with metal blades and larger fans for cooling even the largest of spaces.

Desktop fan: As the name implies, they sit on a table or desk without taking up too much space and are designed more for personal cooling at short to mid-range due to their less powerful motors.

Bladeless fan: These futuristic fans come in many different shapes and sizes, from floor units to personal desktop fans. They suck air in and expel it at a high velocity to cool you down. Quieter than a traditional fan, they're also more expensive.
