What happened to Dr Michael Mosley?

On Wednesday June 5, 2024 Dr Michael Mosley went missing on the Greek Island of Symi after going on a walk.

He was found dead five days later on Sunday June 9, 2024.

Dr Mosley left the Saint Nikolas beach on Wednesday at 1.30 pm to walk back to their accommodation in the town of Symi.

He is believed to have then walked alone along a coastal path without his mobile phone to Pedi.

At 1.52 pm he was last seen on a CCTV camera close to a cafe in Pedi shielding himself underneath an umbrella.

The material showed him leaving Pedi and heading towards a rocky path in blazing temperatures of up to 37C.

Greek cops believed Dr Mosley had " fallen from a height" after his walk along the St Nicholas Beach.

His wife, Dr Clare Bailey, alerted police after her husband failed to return by 7.30 in the evening.

Local authorities began retracing his route to locate him.

A search and rescue team was sent from Athens with drones and other equipment to join the search.

His children joined their mother on the search.

A community Facebook group on Symi shared a photo of Dr Mosley wearing a blue polo shirt a cap and sunglasses.

The post appealed for information in finding him.

The statement read: "Have you seen this man?

"He set off to walk back from St Nick's at about 13.30 and failed to make it home.

"His friends are concerned as it is 6 hours since they last saw him.

"His name is Dr Mike Mosley and he is a familiar face for many British people as he has appeared on the BBC."

On Saturday June 8, 2024 at least 100 rescuers and volunteers searched for him in the mountains.

Mayor Papakalodouka told The Sun: "The area is so difficult to walk.

“It’s so rocky.

“He wouldn’t have known where he was going.

“He could have got lost."

The mayor also stated that Mosley had no water, saying : “You can’t survive in this weather.”

Then on Sunday morning a body was discovered - only a 30 minute walk from where Mosley was last seen.

Barman Ilias Tsavaris found the body and told The Sun: "I walked up 30 metres and I saw an image of a person...

"I went closer and closer...And then I saw what I saw.

"You don't see a dead body everyday, it is not a warzone, it's summer you are supposed to have fun and swimming."

Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglou told The Sun "there was no question" the man was Dr Mosley.

Konstantina Dimoglou said: "We have been able to identify him from his watch and clothes.

"He was found close to a cave on a rocky beach.

“How long he had survived there is hard to tell but he had walked a very long way.

“He was close to where he wanted to get to."

In the early afternoon his wife Clare Bailey confirmed his death.

She wrote in a statement: I don’t know quite where to begin with this.

“It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband.

"We had an incredibly lucky life together.

“We loved each other very much and were so happy together.

“I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days.

"My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world.

“It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you.

"We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it.

"He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.

"Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special.

"We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him.

"Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked.

“We’re also very grateful to The Press who have dealt with us with great respect.

"I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends.

“Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael."
